The positional relationship between the pterygospinous ligament and surrounding neurovascular structures

Abstract
The complex anatomical relationship between the pterygospinous ligament and neighboring neurovascular structures within the infratemporal fossa has significant clinical relevance. Twenty embalmed Korean cadaveric hemi-sectioned head specimens underwent systematic dissections to expose the infratemporal fossa structures. Seventeen instances of the pterygospinous ligament were observed (85%), with incomplete ossification in three instances. Complete ossification resulting in the pterygospinous foramen was not observed. Neurovascular structures were laterally positioned in 88.2% and medially in 11.8% of observed sides relative to the ligament. Understanding these spatial associations is pivotal for precise surgical navigation and interventions within this critical region. Varied presentations, notably ossification, demand careful consideration during clinical procedures.
